10 Dog breeds that can complicate your homeowners insurance

Humans and dogs have been best friends for thousands of years, but the breed of dog you own could add complications to when you go to buy homeowners insurance.

Some insurance companies hesitate to offer coverage to people who own dog breeds and mixes that are believed to be more likely to bite and cause injuries.

More than 700 cities across the U.S. have passed breed-specific laws and ordinances to reduce both ownership and breeding of certain dogs, mainly pit bulls, according to the non-profit group DogsBite.com.

Here are the 10 breeds most often deemed dangerous by insurance companies, according to Einhorn Insurance:

1. Pit Bulls and Staffordshire Terriers

2. Doberman Pinschers

3. Rottweilers

4. Chow chows

5. Great Danes

6. Perro de Presa Canario

7. Akitas

8. Alaskan Malamute

9. German Shepherds

10. Siberian Huskies
