Luxury vehicles and sports cars account for nearly half of the 25 vehicles with the highest insurance costs, according to a new analysis.
Telsa’s Model X and Model S grabbed the top 2 spots with the average cost to insure eclipsing $1,850.
The list by 24/7 Wall St. and USA Today analyzed data on insurance claim frequency and insurance cost per vehicle collected by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4 door long wheelbase, Mitsubishi Lancer, and BMW 4 Series 2 door round out the top 5 most expensive models to insure.
Just three of the 25 cars with the lowest insurance costs fell into the luxury category.
In addition to price, the size of the vehicle appears to be a significant factor in insurance payouts, the analysis found. Many of the vehicles with the lowest insurance claim payments were large and midsize SUVs.
Car insurance premiums rose by more than 20% between 2011 and 2018 to a national annual average premium of $1,427, according to the analysis.
